Activity 3.2.1 Natural Resources Review
Everything on this planet uses resources to survive. “Resources we
take from the environment are called natural resources.” (Exploring Natural
Resources) Renewable and nonrenewable are the two categories that comprise of
natural resources. Nonrenewable resources are resources that once taken out of
the environment cannot be replenished or take an extremely long time to be
created again. And examples of nonrenewable resources are fossil fuels and
minerals. Although these two examples can be replenished it does take some time
to be created naturally. Renewable resources are resources that are easily replenished
by the planet. “Renewable resources are essentially inexhaustible or can be
replaced relatively rapidly.” (Exploring Natural Resources) Solar, wind, and wood
are just some examples of renewable resources.
While renewable resources can be replenished easily, they can also
be depleted to a point where they become scarce or too expensive. This is when
we start to rely on alternative resources. We did this when we replaced steel
on cars with plastic. An issue we have with alternatives is the quality might
not be as good as a natural resource and the effect on the environment because
they use chemicals to make. Another useful method to conserve natural resources
is to recycle and reuse. Recycling enables natural resources to be used over
and over again, so then new resources do not have to be taken from the earth.” (Exploring
Natural Resources)
