The information above allows us to
compare how a country is developing. The very top is the information of the
world data for a most developed country. The information below is the world data
for the least developed country. If we just compare the two lists, we can see
major differences. The first thing we look at is the birth rate. In developed
countries the birthrate is lower while in the least developed the birth rate is
significantly higher. The next item to look at is the deathrate of the population.
The higher the deathrate, the less developed the country will be. We look at
the growth rate of the country after that. This is the rate a population grows
or shrinks in an area. The next category will be the life expectancy of male
and females in the population. The average number of children per childbearing
females is another category to look at. The lower number of average children the
more developed the country is. The last category to look at is gross national
income. These six categories are dramatically different from more developed
countries to least developed countries. The opportunity is greater when technology
and education are available to the population, that is the reason these numbers
are so different.
The two
countries I compared was Somalia in Eastern Africa and the South American
country of Costa Rica. On the list, we can see Costa Rica’s birth rate is 11
people for every1,000 person. While Somalia has a birth rate of 44 people for
every 1,000 people. Costa Rica is closer to the world average of a most developed
country while Somalia is over the world average on a least developed country. Next
on the list would be the mortality rate. Although both countries mortality rate
is closer to most developed with Costa Rica at 6 per 1,000 and Somalia at 12
per 1,000. This leads to the next category population growth rate. When you
take the birthrate and subtract the mortality rate you get the growth amount. We
can see there is a major difference between the two countries. Costa Rica is at
.4% while Somalia is at 3.2%. This means Costa Rica’s population is not growing
as fast as Somalia and the numbers are closer to least developed country for Somalia.
The life Expectancy is higher in Costa Rica than in Somalia by around 20 years.
The people are living longer in Costa Rica and the population is growing slower.
This puts them on the Most developed side. The lower developed country of Somalia
has a higher fertility rate. This category is attributed to the population growth,
and I believe this is due to the education of the population and technology of
the country. The last category is the gross national income. In a more developed
you have more opportunity to gain more money that is why Costa Rica is above
the world average in this category and Somalia is below the world average for a
least developed country.
This is an extreme
example of how to tell if a country is underdeveloped or trending to become more
developed. These two countries are on are on the opposite side of what a developed
country is. We can see Costa Rica’s numbers are closer to the worlds most developed
categories and Somalia’s numbers are closer to the least developed country.
