The results of the two water calculators were off by quite a bit. The first calculator was short by 20 gallons. The second calculator estimated that my household would have 18.6 gallons per person. That was still underestimated by 26.4 gallons per day. Although these tools are helpful, to get an accurate report you must look at the numbers and do the math. These tools can allow you to view a snapshot of ways to lower your water footprint. It is important to know all the information to get an accurate result.

According to USGS the average person uses 80-100 gallons of water per day. After doing the math and reading that the average person uses twice as much as my household, I feel good about my water footprint. There are still things my family can do to lower our water footprint like shorter showers. It is also important to monitor the usage of outdoor water. The wrong kind of plants for the area you live in can end up using more water to keep alive than you think. I believe the water-efficient equipment and the rebates that water companies give out are having a major impact on household water usage. Lowering our water footprint can have many benefits such as saving money and diverting less water away from rivers, bays, and estuaries. Although we view water as unlimited, the amount of fresh water is lowering. Trying to conserve water takes a real effort but, being able to do it will not only benefit a single person but everyone.
